Monasteries / Convents In Appenzell Inner Rhodes there are four convents and one monastery belonging to the Capuchin religious order. The monastery was founded more than 400 years ago at the time of the Counter-Reformation. The «Leiden Christi» convent in Jakobsbad dates back to the middle of the 19th century and is the second foundation of the Wonnenstein convent. The Inner Rhodes convents of Appenzell, Wonnenstein and Grimmenstein were founded in the late Middle Ages and have a long tradition. The «St. Ottilia Grimmenstein» convent in Walzenhausen originates from a small sister community in the parish of Höchst-St.Margarethen. In the year 1424, the sisters settled near the Grimmenstein castle ruins. The «Mariä Rosengarten Wonnenstein» convent near Teufen is a typical foundation located in isolated countryside dating back to the 14th century. The «Maria der Engel» Capuchin convent in Appenzell is still known to the public under its old name of «Chlos». |
